Facilities
The new building has been carefully designed in line with Care Commission guidelines to provide a state of the art facility for the nursery pupils.
The Quiet Room
The pre-school children spend time in here each day in small groups, where they are involved in more formal activities to prepare them for school. The library and small computer suite are also located in this room, where the children work in a supervised environment, learning computer skills and using educational software. Jigsaws, games and some construction activities also take place here.
The Activity Room
This room is at the centre of the nursery, where the children come together for joint activities such as snack time, with a healthy selection of fruit, vegetables, milk or water. Another feature of this space is music and movement, where the children learn traditional singing games, the use of percussion instruments and the exploration of dance to a wide variety of music. There is also a creative corner, where the children enjoy dressing up and role-play activities. The emphasis is on learning through play.
The Craft Room
In the craft room, the children enjoy a stimulating variety of painting activity, drawing, craft, construction, sand and water play.
Other activities such as news-time, story-time and circle-time takes place in both the Quiet room and Activity room. The children also take part in P.E. in the activity room, outside at the park, where they also enjoy nature walks, or in the sports hall at St Columbus.
The new play park at Birkmyre opened at the end of January 2009, perfect for running around after nursery.
The new building also has a large floored attic space with plenty of storage space to allow the activities and games to be rotated according to the current topic.
In the Spring of 2009, the school also had a secure outdoor play area built giving the children the opportunity to plant flowers and have supervised fun with plentiful playthings.
All materials and equipment are provided by the school including a smock and waterproof apron. Milk and a snack of fruit are provided at break time.
The school and its facilities are inspected annually by the Care Commission.
