Ambulance Crew
What an amazing and inspiring day!
We were totally spoilt today with a visit from Doug, one of our Duchal dads, who is an air ambulance doctor and his paramedic colleague Dave. They work out of Glasgow airport on the air ambulance.
Having spent the term learning all about transport the children were fascinated by hearing about the pilot who also works with them. They mainly cover the west of Scotland but can be called out anywhere depending on the emergency.
They arrived in an ambulance and the kids were allowed to try the oxygen masks, turn on the blue lights and sirens. They also tested their oxygen levels and pulse with a machine and tried on the air ambulance helmets.
Obviously this was great fun however we also had a very important life lesson and learnt how to call for an ambulance and the importance of knowing where you live if you call 999.
Thank you so much to Doug and Dave for an inspiring and fun morning Read article -

Preparing for the Next Step
Preparing for the next step in life is an important part of Duchal life, whether it be learning to be independent, for the 1st time away from parental guidance or getting ready for the move to primary school, Duchal staff are there to make the transition as smooth as possible.
With our low pupil to teacher ratio and 3 separate rooms we are able to concentrate on the different requirements of our children.
With the summer term flying by, our older children are all set for the move to school, and have been practising their fine motor skills and pencil grip with some writing practice. While the younger children have been having fun with magnet design - it takes a lot of concentration but in a fun way they are learning without realising!!

Science & Art in One!
We love a bit of science at Duchal. STEM learning comes in all shapes and sizes and more often than not the children don't realise they are having a science lesson!!
The children have had great fun making their own playdough (it is always more satisfying to play with something that you have made youself!!!). Close attention was give to ensure they had the right quantities of ingredients and then that they were carefully mixed to create the perfect end product with the right texture!
The Science lesson was swiftly followed by an Art lesson, seeing lots of creativity and innovation with playdough art!! Read article -

Benefits of Outdoor Learning in Early Years
In this day and age we all know the importance of keeping active, children who learn to play outdoors are much more likely to continue to enjoy outdoor activities such as walking, running and cycling as they get older. Given the number of gadgets and new technology available to us all, outdoor play is an extremely important factor in combatting an increasingly sedentary lifestyle.
Being outside allows children to express themselves freely and unlike an indoor classroom, there aren’t any space constraints, the sense of freedom playing outdoors brings is fantastic for a child’s development, both physically and mentally.
This week the Duchal children have been outside playing football, walking round the park, and practicing for sports day as well as maximising our wonderful garden with all it has too offer, so despite the unseasonably chilly weather this the children really have benefitted from all the "outside classroom" has to offer.

Importance of Learning a Foreign Language
Research shows the benefits of learning a foreign language at a young age.
Duchal Nursery has it's own dedicated native French speaking teacher who introduces our children to French as soon as they start their pre-school education with us. With weekly French lessons our children are being surrounded by foreign language and cultures on a regular basis.

Learning through play
At Duchal Nursery we promote the importance of learning through play.
Through play children develop language skills, their emotions and creativity, social and intellectual skills. For most children their play is natural and spontaneous and it is a joy to be part of!

Nursery Activity Update
Welcome back after the Easter holidays, the children have returned with lots of lovely stories of their adventures.
Although we have only been back four days they have been very busy days. Paddy from Morton has returned this term to teach us football skills. We had fun pretending to be planes and trains and to drive cars. The children all enjoy the time with Paddy, he will join us on a Tuesday morning each week this term.
We have been practising for sports day, had a lovely walk around the park and played in our garden. Touchy feely boxes have been made with great excitment.
Preparation has been underway making our items for the Kilmacolm show in May. The children are working very hard on this.
Lots of drawings and paintings have been created and wonderful models have been constructed.
As the weather has been so nice and we hope it will continue more of our learning will be outside. Read article -
